Pastor Starr grew up on a farm west of Mt. Pleasant, MI.  In high school at Michigan Lutheran Seminary (MLS) he became interested in athletic training, which helped him work his way through college.  He married Laurie Steeby, a WELS Lutheran elementary school teacher, in 1985.  Laurie is also a graduate of MLS and is currently the executive assistant at MLS.  Laurie has also served as the director of Today's Christian Women's Retreat for the last 19 years.  They have three children:  Elizabeth, a MLS alumna and 2008 graduate of SVSU with a bachelor's degree in exercise science but enjoys working as a dental assistant; R. David, a MLS, MLC, and WLS alumnus who is an ordained minister and is currently serving as an admissions counselor at Martin Luther College, and Michael, a junior at Michigan Lutheran Seminary, studying for the pastoral ministry. Elizabeth is married to James Vanover who works in the automotive industry.  David is married to Anne (Zietlow) who is also an alumna of MLC and works in the MLC admissions office.
Pastor and Laurie enjoy all kinds of traveling, especially hosting groups to Lutherland, Germany, Israel, Greece, and to interesting sites in the USA.  They like to garden and do home improvement projects together.  They have also enjoyed putting on marriage improvement weekends and workshops.  Pastor loves being a husband and father.  He has written a book, "Speaking the Unspeakable," and has two Bible studies published by Northwestern Publishing House on 1 & 2 Peter and "Deadly Desires--a Study of Homosexuality."  He co-authored the book, "Forgive Us Our Sins--Homosexuality in the Light of God's Truth," published by Northwestern Publishing House in 2013.  He especially enjoys preaching, teaching Bible classes, working with the Amazing Grace Bookstore, and helping people apply God's Word to their everyday lives and problems.
